Video: Mental health patients in Yemen share their stories

“I found the light at the end of the tunnel,” said Fatima*. “Before, I never felt alive, I was lost. Now I’m back to life,” said Abdul Karim. Fatima and Abdul Karim’s words sum up the long journey they underwent while receiving mental health treatment and support. They are both currently continuing treatment at the Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières’ (MSF) mental health clinic in Al-Gomhouri hospital in Hajjah city, northwest Yemen.

“Psychosis disorders are partly due to ongoing conflict in the country,” says mental health clinic supervisor Muaadh Abdul-Ghani. “Most people have lost their jobs and lost their loved ones as a result of the war.” At Al-Gomhouri, MSF offers psychological care, psychiatric treatment of severe mental health disorders, and psycho-education group sessions.
